Lookah vs Puffco: Which Brand Makes the Better E-Rig?

Lookah vs Puffco: Which Brand Makes the Better E-Rig?

Back in the day, the Lookah vs Puffco conversation was super lopsided. You went with the Puffco Peak if you wanted an awesome e-rig that simplified your daily dabbing ritual. Nobody else had anything close.

But everything changed when Lookah dropped the Dragon Egg and the Unicorn. All of a sudden, there was a real debate about whether you need to spend Puffco money to get a good e-rig.

We carry both brands in our electric dab rigs collection at Badass Glass, so we know firsthand where each device works best. We’ll give you an objective look at some of the most common comparisons we get asked about below - the Puffco Peak vs Lookah Unicorn, the Lookah Dragon Egg vs Puffco Peak, and so on and so forth. Learn more below!

Benefits of Lookah and Puffco E-Rigs

You might already have a solid grasp on the differences between an E-rig vs dab rig if you’re here comparing the Lookah vs Puffco lineup. But let’s start with some context just in case.

A regular dab rig needs a torch, a banger, and the experience to know when the nail is dialed in. E-rigs take all the guesswork out. Press a button, wait a few seconds, pull. No butane or timing. It’s as convenient and practical as it gets, especially for on-the-go dabbing.

That’s not to say dab rigs don’t have their place. We still believe they’re the best way to enjoy premium concentrate to the fullest. Nothing beats the experience a true dab has to offer. But you might find room in your rotation for an e-rig in addition to your at-home rig. These are great for travel in particular. They’re also great when you don’t want to bother with any sort of prep work.

As for the Puffco vs Lookah comparison, they sit on opposite ends of the spectrum. Puffco is for the premium crowd. Lookah devices cost less and you get tons of extras in the box (multiple coils, dab tools, cleaning brushes).

We’re not here to tell you one is inherently better than the other between Lookah vs Puffco. We see customers go both ways depending on what matters to them. It’s not all that helpful to just compare the brands themselves, either. We want to get more specific. Let’s look at the Lookah Dragon Egg vs Puffco Peak side-by-side below.

Comparing the Lookah Dragon Egg vs Puffco Peak

The Dragon Egg sits around $70-100 retail. The Puffco Peak starts at $275. That tells you most of what you need to know about the differences here. One is premium, the other is budget. But is it really worth paying nearly 4x as much for the Puffco Peak, or can the cheaper device hang?

Design

The Dragon Egg looks exactly like what it's called - egg-shaped, 6.6 inches, zinc-alloy shell, with an acrylic water chamber. It’s meant to be held in one hand. The little LED screen shows voltage and battery level, which is honestly pretty rare for a device under $100. It punches above its weight class.

The Peak is marginally taller (7 inches) with an aluminum base and a borosilicate glass top. It looks sharper, more modern. It feels more intentional as a piece you’d leave out on a table. It’s a bit more of a statement.

Vapor Production

You shouldn’t expect the same vapor quality from an e-rig as you’d get from a true dab rig - but the Puffco Peak comes super close. The 3D Chamber heats from the walls, not just the floor, so your concentrate gets evenly vaporized with less material wasted. Thicker clouds, better flavor.

In contrast, the Dragon Egg’s Type C quartz dish coil only heats from below. Still produces legit vapor, but it’s not even close to the same class as the Puffco Peak in this regard.

Temperature Control

You get three presets in the Dragon Egg - 350F, 400F, and 450F. The Peak runs hotter on both the bottom and top ends of the spectrum, but it gives you a little more flexibility with four modes - 450F, 500F, 550F, 600F.

This is the biggest practical difference between the Lookah Dragon Egg vs Puffco Peak. The Dragon Egg is better for flavor chasers who want to really dial down the temperature to preserve terpenes and flavonoids. On the other hand, the Puffco Peak is better for those who want lung-busting rips that mirror a true dab.

One thing to note: You don’t get custom temperature control with either of these. The presets give you plenty of flexibility, but you may feel “boxed in” if your temperature sweet spot falls between presets.

Ease of Use

No learning curve either way since both are powered by a single button. Speed is the difference. The Dragon Egg heats in under 10 seconds and runs a preheat cycle before your first pull. The Peak sits closer to 20 seconds. It’s marginal, but enough to warrant mentioning.

Durability

The Dragon Egg's acrylic bubbler is probably its most underrated feature. It’s far less likely to shatter than the Puffco Peak’s borosilicate glass top. We sell Puffco Peak glass attachments for exactly that reason. The zinc-alloy body on the Dragon Egg holds up well to daily use too.

Cost

The other major difference between Lookah vs Puffco in general, across all models, is cost. The Dragon Egg vs Peak showdown demonstrates this - you’re looking at $70-100 vs $275.

Sticker price doesn’t really tell you everything, either. The Dragon Egg ships with two quartz coils in the box. Replacements are only $10-15. Peak chamber replacements are far more expensive per unit. There’s no denying that the Lookah Dragon Egg is the better value.

Comparing the Lookah Unicorn vs Puffco Peak

Honestly, the Lookah Dragon Egg vs Puffco Peak comparison isn’t exactly apples to apples. The Lookah Unicorn 2.0 is a closer competitor to the Puffco Peak. It starts at about $170. There’s also a mini version that’s only $90. Let’s compare these two models side-by-side.

Design

The Unicorn is about 3x heavier and half an inch taller than the Peak. It stays where you put it. It’s not meant to be a travel device. The Unicorn has a glass percolator with twin vapor pathways and a magnetic quick-connect top that pops off for cleaning. It’s a dramatic step up from the Dragon Egg, and much more closely resembles the Puffco Peak. They’re pretty similar as far as design goes.

Vapor Production

The Unicorn comes with two coils.

  • The Quartz Hive for quick on-demand hits.
  • The Quartz Dish for longer sessions where you load up and settle in.

That variety is pretty unique, and Puffco doesn’t match it with the Peak. Swapping out the hardware is quick and easy, too. This gives you more control over how the hits feel and how the sessions unfold.

Temperature Control

You know already that the Peak tells you exactly what temperature you're dabbing at: 450F, 500F, 550F, or 600F. The Unicorn 2.0 doesn't work that way. Lookah gives you three voltage levels (3.3V, 3.6V, and 4.2V). Actual heat depends on which coil you're running.

That means less precision but more range. You can take smooth, flavor-forward pulls on the low setting with the Dish coil. Crank it to the top voltage with the Hive for harder rips than anything the Peak puts out.

Ease of Use

Again, these devices are dramatically easier than the typical dabbing experience. But we’re really impressed with what Lookah did in the Unicorn 2.0.

The Unicorn’s manual mode lets you hold the button for on-demand heating with the Hive coil. Auto mode gives you a 60-second session with the Dish coil (via triple-click).

The device vibrates to tell you when the session starts and finishes. It’s a minor detail, but the haptic feedback is genuinely useful when you're not staring at the device.

Like we mentioned earlier, the Puffco Peak keeps it to one mode. Simpler, but less to work with once you know what you want out of a session.

Durability

Both use glass percolator tops, so that's the fragile piece on either device. We carry replacement glass for the Peak if the worst happens. Lookah sells replacement bubblers for the Unicorn Mini, too. Just be careful with both, especially when traveling.

Cost

The cost discrepancy is a little closer here - $170 vs $220 for the Unicorn 2.0 vs Peak. Only $50 apart. But again, the device Lookah makes is the better value for the money. Plus, you get two coils in the box, whereas the Peak ships with one chamber.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Lookah dab pens good?

Yes, especially for the price. You get reliable coils, decent battery life per charge, and replacement parts at a fair cost. Maybe build quality is a step below Puffco, but the vapor quality is closer than you’d think.

Are puffcos better than dab rigs?

They’re really not the same thing. Puffco simplifies your dabbing experience, especially on the go. But a traditional rig with a quartz banger gives you the most authentic dabbing experience. Most people who try electronic don't go back. But some people prefer the ritual, and that's totally valid. You might even find that you want both in your collection for different occasions!

What is the difference between Lookah Dragon Egg and Puffco Peak?

Price and heating tech. The Lookah Dragon Egg is $70-100 with a quartz dish coil that heats from below. The Puffco Peak is $275 with a 3D Chamber that heats from every direction. We carry both here at Badass Glass.

Is the Lookah Dragon Egg worth buying?

You could make the case it’s the best e-rig under $100 that actually performs. Battery lasts about 25 sessions, heats in under 10 seconds, and the acrylic bubbler won't shatter if you knock it around. We've sold a lot of them and almost never get customer complaints or returns. There’s a reason for that!
